ONEIDA . . . Burton E. “Burt” Niles, 86, of 251 Belmont Avenue, Oneida, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a brief illness. He was born on June 22, 1938, in Oneida, the son of the late Elbert and Zilpha (Loomis) Niles. Burt spent his early years in Sylvan Beach, graduating from Oneida High School in 1956, and has lived in Oneida since 1967. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Burt worked for the Madison-Oneida BOCES in Verona for 18 years, retiring in 2005. He was an active member of the Oneida Baptist Church, the American Legion, Post #169 in Oneida, the Oneida Elks Lodge #767, and the Oneida Order of Owl’s #1606. Burt enjoyed reading, puzzles, and spending time with his family. He married Margaret J. “Midge” Chappelle on November 23, 1961, in Oneida. Midge passed away on May 9, 2024. Surviving are: two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Elizabeth Niles of Cicero, and Scott and Maria Niles of Sherrill; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Scott Smith of Oneida; one brother, Elbert Niles of Florida; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Arlie Aldasch of Vernon, and Catherine and Robert Stanton of Texas; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews, and cousins. At Burt’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at Oneida Castle Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Oneida Baptist Church, 242 Main Street, Oneida, NY 13421.

At Burt’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at Oneida Castle Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
