Obituary of Shirley A. Ponto

CANASTOTA . . . Shirley A. Ponto, 88, formerly of Canastota, and currently a resident of Oneida Extended Care Facility, passed away, on Saturday, April 19, 2025. She was born on July 7, 1936, in Canastota, NY. She was the daughter of the late Donald E. and Flossie V. “Florence” (Ellsworth) Parkhurst. On May 11, 1962, she married Carmen J. Ponto. The couple shared in a union of over forty-two years prior to Mr. Ponto’s passing on December 23, 2005. Shirley was raised and educated in Canastota and attended local school. She began her career as a Hairdresser and later retired from the Canastota Central School District where she was a Teacher Assistant for over twenty-five years. She had a passion for Bingo, Cross Stich, and Cross Word Puzzles. Her favorite times were spent with her family and many friends. Surviving are two daughters and a sons-in-law, Maryanne and Robert Peryer of Chittenango, and Catherine and Darrell Fowler of Canastota; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Melissa Ponto of Canastota; grandchildren, Sabrina Fowler and her fiancée, Wesley Jock, Danae Fowler, Dylan Ponto and his fiancée, Bridgette Lamb, Kyle Peryer, and Courtney Peryer; a great grandson, Dominick C. Ponto. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother. Donald N. Parkhurst. In keeping with Mrs. Ponto’s wishes there will be no public services. Arrangements are under the care of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota.
