SYRACUSE . . .



Ronald William "Ronnie" Surrette, 63, of Syracuse, and a former Canastota resident, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.



He was born on December 21, 1961, in Canastota, the son of William and Laura (Newcomb) Surrette.



Ronnie spent his early years in Canastota, graduating from Canastota High School in 1980.



Having been inspired by watching Graham Kerr on television after school, he became known as a talented local chef. He began at the tender age of 12 working with his mentor, Carmen Compoli, at Hotel Oneida. He spent the bulk of his career at the former Rusty Rail, and Bella Luna, in Canastota, and later became a trainer for UNO Pizzeria's. He could also be seen with the boys at Basillio's stand at the New York State Fair, and ended his career at Riley's in Syracuse.



Ronnie was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, and was an altar server in his youth.



In his younger years, he was active in Boys Scouts, CYO Sports, and the Civil Air Patrol. He loved sports, fishing, and especially dogs.



Surviving are: his mother, Laura Schuyler of Rome; one son, Spencer Surrette of Fort Myers, FL; two sisters, Amy Surrette (John) of Rome, and Christi Whaley of Chittenango; two granddaughters, Makenna and Natalie Surrette, both of Fort Myers, FL; four nephews; and numerous cousins. Ronnie was predeceased by his father, William Surrette.



A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Joseph Ryan will officiate. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota.



In Ronnie's memory, contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities Men's Shelter, 1801 Erie Blvd. East, Syracuse, NY 13210.
