CANASTOTA . . .

Anthony E. "Tony" Pulverenti, 82, of Canastota, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 26, 2026, at his home.

He was born on January 16, 1944, in Canastota, the son of the late Samuel Jr. and Mary (Sgroi) Pulverenti.

Tony lived in Canastota most of his life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1962. He later graduated from Le Moyne College in Syracuse in 1966, with a bachelor's degree in Economics, Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware, and the American Institute of Banking.

He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army, serving overseas during the Vietnam War.

Tony worked in banking for more than 31 years, beginning with the First Trust & Deposit Company, and later worked at the Oneida Valley National Bank, Alliance Bank, Community Bank, and retired from Oneida Savings Bank in 2002.

He was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, a former member of St. Agatha's Bereavement Committee, and St. Agatha's Cemetery Committee.

Tony was very active in his community, and was a past president of the N. Utica and Canastota Rotary Clubs, past president of the Canastota Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the American Legion Charles Miller Post #140 in Canastota, a Boy Scout Leader, a Canastota Little League Coach, and a Canastota Biddy Basketball Coach, a former member of the Canastota Conservation Club, a current member of the Chittenango Rod and Gun Club, a member of the Madison County Trout Unlimited Chapter # 680, a member of the Great Swamp Conservancy, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He was an adjunct professor of banking at Onondaga County Community College, a certified instructor in snowmobile safety, a certified archery instructor, and a NYS hunter safety instructor.

He was an avid outdoorsman and vegetable gardener, who especially loved deer hunting and fly fishing, riding his motorcycle, once making the trip to Sturgis, SD and other rallies, and spending time with his family.

He married Ann J. Sgroi on October 14, 1972, in Canastota. They shared fifty-three years of marriage.

Surviving besides his wife, Ann, are: one son, James and Robin Pulverenti of Williamsburg, VA; one daughter, Elizabeth Butler and her partner, Matthew St. Onge, of Baldwinsville; one grandson, Alexander Butler; Alexander's father, Curtis Butler and his partner, Shila Tierney, of Cicero; three brothers, John and Ellen Pulverenti of Merritt Island, FL, Richard and Lela Pulverenti of Canastota, and Louis Pulverenti of Morrisville and Kimberly Chavez; one sister, Mary Lazzaro of Satsuma, FL; one brother-in-law, Thomas Sgroi (Susan) of Rochester; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Pulverenti of Canastota, Janice Guida (Ralph) of Liverpool, and Marie Arena (Steve) of Ohio; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Tony was predeceased by one brother, Samuel Pulverenti III (Louise); and one brother-in-law, Nick Lazzaro.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Joseph P. Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota.
