Barbara J. Oster Vermilyea Obituary
Loving Mother, Grandma, Gigi, Aunt, and Friend, Barbara J. Oster Vermilyea, 82, of Sandy Lane, Canastota, NY, passed away peacefully, July 14, 2026, at the Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford.
Born on October 21, 1943, in Syracuse, NY to the late Dorothy and Robert Chapin. She married Wayne Oster in 1960 and Edward Vermilyea in 2000.
Barb worked at Brace Mueller for 4 years and Oneida Ltd. 25 years. Barb enjoyed crocheting baby blankets, taking care of her flowers, looking up everyone’s ancestry, swimming and family parties but most of all cherished her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
Surviving are her former husbands: Wayne Oster and Edward Vermilyea; sister, Patricia Quackenbush and sister and brother-in-law, Lona (Steven) Mathes; her children, Tracy (Steve) Pulverenti, Julie Backus (Richard Chapman) all of Canastota; Andrew (Keri) Oster, Leesburg, VA and Scott (Cindy) Oster, Sneads Ferry, NC. She is also survived by a special niece, Tess Casler; grandchildren, Nicholas (Kim) Pulverenti, Sara Pulverenti and Justin Snow, Samantha Pulverenti, Chelsea (Paul) LeBlanc, Cassidy (Ethan) Childs, Abby (Jake) Ayers, Adam Oster, Konnor (Madison) Oster, Kendyl and Kyler Oster; fourteen great-grandchildren, Luca, Vincent, Jackson, Elias, Isla, Reina, Owen, Finley, Harper, Atley, Scarlett, Adaline, Amelia, and Andi; and several Nephews and Nieces. She was predeceased by a brother Paul Chapin and her in-laws Ronald and Phyllis Oster
She will be remembered for her notes written on special cards, her laugh and wit! Her favorite poem was: “I Wish this for You and All the Flowers of My Life”.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Whitelaw Cemetery, North Main Street, Canastota.
