Obituary of Helen E. Hurd

CANASTOTA . . . Helen E. Hurd, 97, formerly of 3757 Seneca Avenue, Canastota, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at the Betsy Ross Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rome, NY. She was born on June 20, 1920, in Camden, the daughter of the late Frederick and Anna (Dolan) DeLaRoche. Helen spent her early years in Camden, and was a 1938 graduate of Camden High School. She, later, went to beautician school, and was a self-employed hairdresser, working from her home for over 30 years. She gained many friends through her hairdressing career and became known for her talented, creative methods. She, also, enjoyed gardening, and many times she would notice cars stopping to admire her beautiful gardens. Helen's talents extended beyond hairdressing, as she was, also, an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of the United Church of Canastota, and a member of the Ladies Home Bureau in the 1950's. Helen married Edward M. Hurd on October 7, 1938, in Canastota. Edward passed away on August 5, 2010. Surviving are: one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Elizabeth Hurd of Warwick, NY; one daughter, Cynthia Hurd of Syracuse; one grandchild, Brian Hurd, and his wife, Karen, of Warwick; three great grandchildren, Logan, Justin and Addison Hurd; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Helen was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Hazen Peters, and Mazie (DeLaRoche) Gregory. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Deacon Adolph Uryniak of St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, will officiate. Burial will be in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota. At Helen's request, there will be no calling hours. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Madison County Office For The Aging, 138 Dominick Bruno Avenue, Canastota, NY, 13032, or to the United Church of Canastota, 144 Center Street, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
