CANASTOTA . . . Raymond J. Donath, Jr., 71, of 211 West Avenue, Canastota, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021, at his home, following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 2, 1950, in Syracuse, the son of the late Raymond Sr. and Eleanor (Noyce) Donath. Ray spent his early years in Syracuse, attending Henninger High School. He later lived in Chittenango, and has lived in Canastota for more than 30 years. He is a Viet Nam Veteran, serving overseas with the US Army. Ray had a home improvement business for many years. He loved his work and would help anyone, as he was kindhearted and very caring. Ray loved to read and listen to oldies music. He was a member of AARP, American Legion Charles Miller Post #140 in Canastota, and the VFW Memorial Post #600 in Canastota. Ray married Tama Jean Holmes on August 22, 2007, in Chittenango. Surviving besides his wife, Tama Jean, are: two sons, Raymond Hewitt of Syracuse, and Eric Hewitt; six stepsons, Thomas Wallis of Texas, Corey Wallis of Peterboro, Ryan Holmes of Fulton, Codey Wallis of Texas, Dakota Wallis/Smith of Texas, and Austin Trudell of Mexico; six stepdaughters, Jamie Brown of Arkansas, Amanda Moore of Kentucky, Mary Wallis of Eaton, Victoria Wallis of Canastota, Ashley Holmes Wallis of Syracuse, Cheyenne Trudell of Mexico; one sister, Judy Bogan of West Monroe; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his lifelong friend, Douglas Stevens of Canastota. Ray was predeceased by two sisters, Marilyn and Elaine. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Face coverings and social distancing are required. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. William M. Wilcox will officiate. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Greater Lenox Ambulance Service (GLAS), PO Box 382, Canastota, NY 13032, or to Wanderers' Rest Humane Association, Inc., PO Box 535, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
