Obituary of James Douglas "Doug" Pexton

CHITTENANGO . . . James Douglas "Doug" Pexton, 81, of 4003 Brick Kiln Drive, Chittenango, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Oneida Healthcare, following a brief illness. He was born on June 12, 1939, in Canastota, the son of the late Shepard and Gladys (Rouse) Pexton. Doug lived in Canastota most of his life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1958. He has lived in Chittenango for the last 10 years. He worked as a printer for the Syracuse Post Standard for 40 years, retiring in 2001. He also had a cemetery monument lettering business for many years. Doug was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Canastota, and held offices of Deacon and Trustee, and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed tools, spending time with his family and friends, and helping his children with various home projects, always with a good laugh! He was a fan of the New York Yankees, and SU sports. Doug married the love of his life, Judith A. Scherrer, on June 19, 1960, in Canastota. Next month they would have been married 61 years. Surviving besides his wife, Judy, are: one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tracey Pexton of Chittenango; one daughter, Deborah Pexton of Jamesville; one brother, Donald Pexton of Oneida; one granddaughter, Meghan Pexton, who was the light of his life; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doug was predeceased by two brothers, Shepard Pexton, and Richard Pexton; and two sisters, Dawn Wilsey, and Jane Perretta. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Face coverings and social distancing are required. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Pastor Sally J. Eddy will officiate. Burial will be in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Steeple Fund, 304 S. Peterboro Street, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
