Obituary of Betty Jane Lyman

STOCKBRIDGE . . . Betty Jane Lyman (nee Shove), 88, formerly of Stockbridge, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare, Utica, following a brief illness. She was born to Adrian and Sarah Frances (Dayton) Shove on April 18, 1933, in Oneonta, New York. She was predeceased by her mother shortly thereafter. Adrian married Mary Fredericks in 1936. Betty spent her early years in Ithaca, graduating from Ithaca High School in 1951, and from Oneonta State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, Education in 1955. While on summer break, visiting the Adirondacks with friends, she met Lloyd Lyman. They married two years later, on July 23, 1955, and made their home on the family farm in Stockbridge, NY. She taught Home Economics at Madison Central School in Madison, New York for one year, 1955-1956. However, Betty was a life-long teacher, as a farm wife and stay-at-home mom, in Cooperative Extension, as a 4-H leader, and, in later years teaching rug braiding. Surviving are: her four children and their families, Sara and Steve Pickett of Oneonta, Glen and Elaine Lyman of Stockbridge, Connie and David Tenero of Rosemont, PA, and Chuck Lyman of Utica; grandchildren, Matthew and Gretchen Tenero, Anna (Tenero) and Jeff Sloan, Jesse and Samuel Lyman; step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Ryan Makuch and families; and step-nephew, John Ismay and family. Betty was predeceased by her parents; her husband Lloyd on December 22, 1996; her half-sister, Helen, age 11, in December 1954; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hubert and Bette Lyman. At Betty's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services at this time. Private burial will be in Stockbridge Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc, 201 James Street, Canastota, New York. For those who wish to do so, memorial contributions may be made to the Stockbridge United Methodist Church, PO Box 178, Munnsville, NY 13409. Betty's family would like to thank the Lutheran Home in Clinton for the wonderful care they gave to her.
