CANASTOTA . . . Josephine M. Juravich, 96, of 401 W. Lewis Street, Canastota, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. She was born on March 1, 1927, in New York City, the daughter of the late Vito and Catherine (Puglia) LoMonaco. Josephine lived in Canastota all her life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1945. She later graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse in 1949. Josephine married Peter Juravich on August 20, 1955, in St. Agatha's Church, Canastota. Peter passed away on March 28, 2017. She worked as a Registered Nurse for several years at the former Lenox Memorial Hospital in Canastota, and later at the former Oneida City Hospital Extended Care Facility, retiring in 1982. Josephine was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, where she was a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and taught 4th grade religious education. She was also a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, making many rosaries that were sent to Kerala, India. Josephine was also a member of the Sisters of the Lamp, an organization which was instrumental in granting scholarships to nursing students. She was active in her community; was a member of the Canastota Lionettes, and volunteered at the Opportunity Shop in Canastota. She and her husband, Peter, together volunteered at Loaves & Fishes in Canastota, and they received the Roses of the Living Award, for their many years of volunteer work in the community. She and Peter enjoyed traveling, visiting many countries, and they loved spending time with their family. Josephine was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith, prayed the rosary daily and influenced family members as well as those around her to continue their faith in God. She was deeply loved and will be missed by us all. Surviving are: two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Kim Juravich of Oswego, and Gerard and Iryna Juravich of Owego; two daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn Stern of NYC, and Kathleen and Robert Cumber of Chittenango; seven grandchildren, Brittany Juravich, Cory Cumber, Kari Cumber, Cody Cumber, Ostap Juravich, Natalia Juravich, and Christina Juravich; two great grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Matthew and Betty LoMonaco, and Paul LoMonaco, all of Canastota; four sisters, Esther Lucarelli of Canastota, Lucille LoMonaco of Liverpool, Marie Smart of Rochester, and Katherine LoMonaco of Canastota; as well as several nieces and nephews. Josephine was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Lynn Juravich; five brothers, Vincent, Louis, Frank, Vito, and John LoMonaco; and one sister, Margaret Maccarone. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Christopher J. Ballard, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Madison County Office of the Aging, 138 Dominic Bruno Blvd, Canastota, NY 13032, or to St. Agatha's Church, c/o Central Office, 321 St. Joseph's Place, Oneida, NY 13421, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
