Jane M. Lavonas, 74, of 129 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Oneida Healthcare Center, following a brief illness.



She was born on February 27, 1949, in Flushing, Queens, NY, the daughter of the late King Wah and Toy Lain (Chin) Eng.



Jane spent her early years in Flushing, graduating from Flushing High School in 1967. She later graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1971, with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology. Jane has lived in Canastota since 1971.



She worked at the Canastota Central School for 31 years, retiring in 2016.



Jane was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, a volunteer at the Canal Town Museum, and was a member of the Canastota Democratic Party.



She enjoyed reading, the Food Network, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.



Jane married Mark J. Lavonas on December 6, 1970, in Oswego. Mark passed away on September 19, 2002.



Surviving are: one son, Matthew (Sue) Lavonas of Rochester; one daughter, Tracey Lavonas of Canastota; two grandchildren, Ellen Jane Lavonas, and Mark Lavonas; four brothers, Gene (Sue) Eng of South Carolina, Victor Eng of Connecticut, Herman (Dona) Eng of California, and Alvin (Wendy Wasdahl) Eng of New York City; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.



Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the funeral home. The Rev. William M. Wilcox will officiate.



In her memory contributions may be made to Canal Town Corporation, 110 Canal Street, Canastota, NY 13032, or to the Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center Street, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
