Obituary of LeRoy Raymond Smith

CANASTOTA . . . LeRoy Raymond Smith, 75, of Canastota, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 28, 1943, in Canastota, the son of the late LeRoy A., Jr. and Retha (Pollard) Smith. Raymond lived in Canastota area most of his life, and attended the Canastota schools. He had also lived in Oneida for several years. He worked for the Oneida Healthcare ECF for almost 30 years, retiring in 2005. Raymond enjoyed his CB radio using the handle "Too Short", fishing, car shows, carpentry, and was a major history buff. He married Cora M. Winchell on February 19, 1977, in Wampsville. Cora died on November 19, 2006. Surviving are: son, Raymond Smith of Lowville, daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Chris Solano of Palm Coast, FL, son Brien Helmer of Canastota, daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Robert VanLare of Duncan, OK, and son-in-law, John Carolla, Sr. of Oneida; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David and Elaine Smith of Canastota, Dennis Smith of Oneida, and Richard and Ellen Smith of Canastota; one sister, Joyce Clark of Canastota; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Raymond was predeceased by a daughter, Marsha Carolla; one brother, Steven Smith; and three sisters, Janice Winchell, Kay Tallman, and Mary Wiedeman. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2018, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home. Pastor Jeff Leahey of the Church on the Rock, Oneida, will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery of West Verona. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, Residents' Fund, 323 Genesee Street, Oneida, NY 13421, with envelopes available at the funeral home. J.
