Obituary of Douglas J. Verzole

CANASTOTA . . . Douglas J. Verzole, 98, formerly of 418 West Lewis Street, Canastota, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, NY. He was born on June 5, 1926, in Syracuse, NY, a son of the late Dennis and Marjory (Mahley) Verzole. Doug was raised and educated in Syracuse, graduating from Nottingham High School in 1944. Mr. Verzole was a proud WWII Navy Veteran. He worked for the General Electric Company in Syracuse, NY prior to his retirement in 1988, for more than thirty-three years. Doug was a member of the St. Agatha’s Church in Canastota. Mr. Verzole coached little league and pony league, he was a past member of the Casolwood Twilight Golf League, the American Legion Charles Miller Post #140 in Canastota and was a member of the Canastota Recreation Commission. Doug was a skilled and accomplished golfer, and a former speed skater; his favorite times were spent with his family and friends. He married Josephine P. Lanzafame on April 15, 1950, in Canastota. Josephine passed away on May 6, 2021. Surviving are: a son and daughter-in-law, William and Natalka Verzole of Clifton Park; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Gerald King of Glenmont; three grandchildren, Colin King and his wife, Morgan, Oleksandra Verzole, and Zenia Verzole; and a sister, Marjory Donovan of Syracuse; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doug was predeceased by four brothers, Louis, Dennis, William, and Bernard Verzole; and three sisters, Elizabeth Alexander, Thelma Peters, and Rosemary Garretson. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024, at St. Agatha’s Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Christopher J. Ballard, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha’s Cemetery, Canastota with military honors.
