Marvin K. Read, 87, of 7082 Forbes Road, Canastota, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a brief illness.



He was born on June 4, 1937, in Oneida, the son of the late Marvin, Sr. and Crystal (Yarington) Read.



Marv spent his early years in Sherrill, graduating from Stockbridge Valley High School in 1956.



He served in the Army National Guard.



Marv worked as a tool maker for Westlake Manufacturing in Canastota for many years, later working for General Electric, Lockheed Martin, and Gaylord Brothers, all of Syracuse.



He enjoyed snowmobiling, woodworking, and spending time with his family.



Marv married Cynthia A. Sgroi on March 9, 1963, in Canastota.



Surviving besides his wife, Cindy, are: one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Michael Findlay of Alabama; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Sharon Mann of Texas; four grandchildren, Brooke Moskvich, Ashley Bodley, Cody Bodley, and Kailee Fuller; one great grandson, Knox Fuller; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marv was predeceased by two daughters, Holli L. Read, and Michele S. Bodley; and a great grandson, Cassius Cody Moskvich.



A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. The Rev. Anthony F. Tosti will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. There will be no calling hours.



In his memory, contributions may be made to the Canastota Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 81, Canastota, NY 13032, Greater Lenox Ambulance Service, Inc., PO Box 382, Canastota, NY 13032, or to Wanderers' Rest Humane Association, Inc., PO Box 535, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
