Obituary of Matthew J. Carswell

CANASTOTA . . . Matthew J. Carswell, 63, of 122 Will New Blvd., Canastota, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Oneida Healthcare. He was born on July 2, 1958, in Herkimer, the son of the late Walter and Eleanor (Smith) Carswell. Matt spent his early years in Herkimer, graduating from Herkimer High School in 1976, and later graduated from Herkimer County Community College in 1978. He also lived in Little Falls for 11 years, and has lived in Canastota most of his life. He had been a New York State Correctional Officer at the Marcy Correctional Facility for twenty-nine years, retiring in 2018. Matt enjoyed golfing, horses and harness racing, but mostly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He married Kim M. Staring on October 14, 1983, in Little Falls. Matt is survived by his loving wife, Kim, of 38 years, and: two sons and a daughter-in-law, Matthew Carswell of Morrisville, and Ryan and Lacy Carswell of Canastota; one daughter and a son-in-law, Krista and Patrick Fountain of Cleveland, NY; five grandchildren, Mischa Fountain, Pacey Fountain, Remy Fountain, Jayce Carswell, and Jude Carswell; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark Sr. and Claire Carswell of Sarasota, FL, Luke and Beth Carswell of Brewerton, and John and Lisa Carswell of Clayton, NC; several nieces and nephews, including, Mark Jr., Nicole, Matthew, Caitlin, Jessica, and Samantha; aunts, uncles, and many cousins. Matt was predeceased by a brother, Jude Carswell. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Greg Smalley of Faith Baptist Church, Morrisville, will officiate.
